Status: first decision issued
In its first decision, the CRTC is taking action to improve the speed and efficiency of the Broadband Fund, advance reconciliation, and help connect all Canadians to high-speed Internet and cellphone service.
Read the new policy.
More decisions to come.
We will launch a process to create an Indigenous Stream of the Broadband Fund. This will be a separate process from the broader policy review to better engage with Indigenous partners, respect their rights and traditions, and advance reconciliation. Read the amendment to the Broadband Fund policy review for more information.
During this consultation, we invited comments on ways to improve the Broadband Fund to provide better Internet and wireless services to rural, remote, and Indigenous communities.
This consultation ran from March 23, 2023 to June 17, 2024
See the “What we learned” section to find comments that were submitted.
Key topics for discussion
We invited you to provide your comments on the following questions:
- Are there connectivity gaps in Canada that are not being addressed by existing funding programs?
- Is the funding available through existing funding programs sufficient?
- Should we create a separate funding stream for projects that would serve Indigenous communities?
- How can we improve the process used to evaluate and select projects to fund?
- Should we consider providing operational funding available to providers in rural and remote areas?
- Should we fund projects to make existing networks more resilient?
- How can we improve engagement between applicants and communities, especially Indigenous communities?
