Co-development of the Indigenous Broadcasting Policy

We are collaborating closely with First Nations, Inuit, and Métis peoples to co-develop an Indigenous broadcasting policy that meets the needs and interests of Indigenous audiences, broadcasters, and content creators.

The co-development of the policy supports the Government of Canada’s reconciliation efforts with Indigenous peoples by helping to protect and promote Indigenous cultures and languages.

Our 3 phases

The co-development of an Indigenous broadcasting policy consists of three phases.

Phase 1: Engagement sessions

The first phase consisted of engagement sessions to identify the needs of Indigenous peoples within the broadcasting system in Canada. Between June 2019 and February 2020, the CRTC held 12 engagement sessions – led by Indigenous facilitators – with Indigenous broadcasters and content creators across Canada.

Phase 2: Public consultation

The engagement sessions helped establish the second phase, the public consultation. We are now seeking a diverse range of perspectives on how radio, television, and online streaming services in Canada can meet the needs and interests of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis peoples.
