Official language minority communities (OLMCs)

Official language minority communities (OLMCs) are defined in the Broadcasting Act (external link) as “English-speaking communities in Quebec and French-speaking communities outside Quebec”.

In keeping with the Official Languages Act (external link) and the Broadcasting Act the CRTC must:

To meet these requirements, the CRTC holds public proceedings, consults with representatives of OLMCs, relies on relevant research, establishes policies and publishes decisions.

Engaging with OLMCs

The CRTC is committed to supporting the participation and vitality of Canada’s OLMCs. This work is supported by a dedicated OLMC engagement team.

The engagement team was created to facilitate the participation of OLMCs in CRTC processes, to help them better understand the regulatory issues that concern them, and to ensure that the needs and interests of OLMCs are taken into account.

Role of the OLMC engagement team:

The team actively works to strengthen collaboration with OLMCs and facilitate dialogue—enabling them to share views and provide feedback on CRTC decisions.
