Google’s open call under the Online News Act
In December 2023, the Department of Canadian Heritage announced an agreement under which Google would contribute $100 million to Canadian news organizations. In Spring 2024, Google held an open call to news organizations that wish to receive compensation under the Online News Act. That open call ended on April 30, 2024.
Who was the focus of this open call
To participate in the open call, news organizations had to file an attestation with Google that they:
- meet the eligibility criteria under section 27 of the Online News Act,
- operate a news outlet that meets the criteria set out in subsections 31(2) or 31(2.1) of the Act, and
- create news content that is made available by Google.
Next steps
- Google can enter into agreements with the news organizations that have attested or with a collective representing these news organizations.
- If it enters into agreements, Google can apply to be exempted from the mandatory bargaining process under the Online News Act.The CRTC will hold a public consultation if it receives an exemption application from Google.
