Broadcasting Exemption Orders

What is a broadcasting exemption order? A broadcasting exemption order lets certain types of television services operate without a licence. These become known as “exempt services”. They must, at all times, meet the criteria in the exemption order to continue operating as an exempt service.

If the service met the criteria in Broadcasting Exemption Order 2015-88 - Exemption order respecting discretionary television programming undertakings serving fewer than 200,000 subscribers, it could be available quite quickly. Without this exemption order, the service would have to go through the normal licensing process: a licence can take up to a year to obtain.
