Licence amendment for MSNBC Canada - Addition of a program category
The Commission approves an application to amend the licence for MSNBC Canada by adding to the list of program categories that may be broadcast by the service.
1.
The Commission received an application by MSNBC Canada Corp. to amend the broadcasting licence of the national English-language Category 2 specialty television service MSNBC Canada in order to add category 10 (Game shows) to the list of categories from which the licensee may draw its programming.
2.
The Commission did not receive any interventions in connection with this application.
3.
In MSNBC Canada, Decision CRTC 2000-650, 24 November and 14 December 2000, the Commission imposed the following condition of licence defining the nature of service that MSNBC Canada could provide:
1. a) The licensee shall provide a national English-language Category 2 specialty television service consisting of an innovative hybrid of Canadian and US breaking-news coverage, in-depth news analysis and long-form actuality programming.
b) The programming must be drawn exclusively from the following categories, as set out in Schedule I to the Specialty Services Regulations, 1990: 1, 2a, 2b, 3, 5b, 11, 12, 13 and 14.
4.
The applicant indicated that the addition of category 10 (Game shows) to the list of approved program categories would not in any way affect the current news and information programming focus of MSNBC Canada. The applicant added that this type of programming would in fact enhance the service by allowing viewers to watch other news-related programs and by providing an entertaining and innovative way for them to test their knowledge of news and current affairs.
5.
Accordingly, the Commission approves the application by MSNBC Canada Corp. to amend MSNBC Canada's condition of licence 1.b) to read as follows:
The programming must be drawn exclusively from the following categories, as set out in Schedule I to the Specialty Services Regulations, 1990:
1 News
2a Analysis and interpretation
2b Long-form documentary
3 Reporting and actualities
5b Informal education/Recreation and leisure
10 Game shows
11 General entertainment and human interest
12 Interstitials
13 Public service announcements
14 Infomercials, promotional and corporate videos
