Decision CRTC 2001-656

Ottawa, 16 October 2001

CJRT-FM Inc.
Toronto, Ontario 2001-0715-3

Application processed by
Public Notice CRTC 2001-94
dated 17 August 2001

New Tamil-language SCMO service

1.

The Commission approves the application by CJRT-FM Inc. to amend the broadcasting licence for CJRT-FM Toronto, by adding a condition of licence allowing the licensee to use a subsidiary communications multiplex operations (SCMO) channel for the purpose of broadcasting a predominantly Tamil-language radio service.

2.

This approval authorizes CJRT-FM to provide a second Tamil-language SCMO service. The first service offers programming in Tamil, Telugu, Kannadam, Malayalam and English.

3.

Programming broadcast using an SCMO channel is not accessible with standard radio equipment. Instead, it requires use of a special receiver.

4.

The Commission's policy regarding services using the SCMO channel of FM stations is set out in Public Notice CRTC 1989-23. In accordance with that policy, licensees are expected to be fully accountable for the content of SCMO services broadcast by their stations.
