The Commission has received the following applications: |
1. |

Application relating to Teletoon |
Corus Entertainment Inc. |
Corus Entertainment Inc. (Corus) filed an application seeking authority to acquire control of the 20% voting interest held by Nelvana Broadcasting Limited (Nelvana) in TELETOON Canada Inc., licensee of an English- and French-language specialty service dedicated to animated programming, TELETOON. |
This application follows Corus' announcement on 13 November 2000 on its take-over of approximately 97% of the issued and outstanding shares of Nelvana Limited through a number of holding companies. Corus currently owns through YTV Canada Inc. an indirect 20% voting interest in TELETOON. In addition, it has interests in the national children's specialty services YTV and Treehouse TV, also via YTV Canada Inc. |
The Commission hereby seeks public comments on the merit of the application including children production company ownership and the potential of increased concentration of ownership in production and broadcasting of children's programming. The potential of preferential treatment that any affiliated companies may confer is of interest. |
With regards to the cable distributor ownership of discretionary undertakings, the Commission has initiated a public process (Public Notice CRTC 2000-165) where it seeks comments in the context of a potential review of its position in this respect. In addition, the public process includes a proposal put forward by the Canadian Cable Television Association (CCTA) as one possible means of alleviating concerns about undue preference. |
