Decision CRTC 2001-17

Ottawa, 18 January 2001

CKMW Radio Ltd.
Brampton, Ontario 1999-1615-2

Application processed by Public Notice CRTC 2000-112 dated 4 August 2000

Licence renewal for ethnic radio station CIAO

1.

The Commission renews the broadcasting licence for CIAO Brampton, from 1 March 2001 to 31 August 2007, subject to the conditions specified in this decision and in the licence to be issued, as also set out in Public Notice CRTC 1999-137.

2.

It is a condition of licence that the licensee provide programming directed to a minimum of 12 cultural groups in a minimum of 13 different languages.

3.

The Commission is satisfied with the initiatives proposed by the licensee to reflect local issues and concerns over the new licence term.

4.

The licensee will continue to participate in the Canadian talent development plan established by the Canadian Association of Broadcasters. In addition, the licensee is required, by condition of licence, to adhere to its commitment to contribute $3,000 per year for three years to establish a catalogue of Canadian ethnic recordings. This contribution reflects the commitment made by the Ontario arm of the Canadian Association of Ethnic Broadcasters and its member radio stations, as set out in Public Notice 1999-117.

5.

In Public Notice CRTC 1998-84, the Commission announced that it had approved, by letter of authority, a change in ownership of CKMW Radio Ltd. that will result in Mr. William Evanov gaining effective control of CIAO. As a benefit of this transaction, CIAO will contribute $13,517 to Canadian talent development each year until 31 August 2005.

6.

The Commission encourages the licensee to consider employment equity issues in its hiring practices and in all other aspects of its management of human resources (PN 1992-59).
