Introducing the CRTC’s Indigenous Relations Team
The CRTC is listening to feedback and is committed to addressing the needs of Indigenous communities. This new team will support Indigenous participation in CRTC proceedings and will ensure the distinct nature and lived experiences of Indigenous peoples are considered across the CRTC’s work.
Stay tuned for updates and new information from the team.

Serving Indigenous Peoples
We will be reaching out to Indigenous communities and other interested parties to introduce our team and build connections.
The Indigenous Relations Team (IRT) has already begun to engage with a number of Indigenous groups and communities. In the coming months, the CRTC looks forward to further announcements regarding its work and the launch of the single point of contact service. As part of its ongoing work, the IRT will:
- provide information sessions to Indigenous communities to better understand the CRTC, its policies and processes;
- explain CRTC proceedings to make them easier to understand;
- clarify the possible impact of a proceeding on an Indigenous community or stakeholder;
- simplify the process of submitting documents to the CRTC, such as comments or evidence, during public consultations;
- create and maintain networks with Indigenous communities and businesses to keep them informed; and
- provide resources, advice and guidance.
This will be particularly important as the IRT will be available to support engagement efforts during the public consultation on the co-development of the Indigenous broadcasting policy.
Raising awareness within the CRTC
In the spirit of reconciliation, our team is working to improve the way the CRTC develops policy and engages with Indigenous peoples.
As a first step, we are reaching out to colleagues to tell them about the team and explain how we can help. We will discuss co-developing best practices for creating and maintaining meaningful relationships with Indigenous groups, communities, and partners.
In addition, we will:
- advise staff working on new broadcasting and telecommunications policies to help them better support Indigenous communities;
- provide advice and coordinate activities aimed at engaging with Indigenous peoples to ensure this is done in a culturally respectful way;
- provide resources to staff on Indigenous issues; and
- be in regular contact with other federal government departments to share information and help them stay informed on issues impacting Indigenous peoples.
