Seeing Canadian Commercials during the Super Bowl
Ads during the Super Bowl get a lot of hype. They are an important part of the overall spectacle, and viewers look forward to watching them.
For Canadian viewers this has been a problem. They didn’t see the same ads as those seen in the US because they were replaced with Canadian ads.
We heard you
For a number of years, Canadians have complained to the CRTC that they wanted to see the American ads during the Super Bowl. The CRTC has taken action to resolve the issue.
Since Super Bowl LI in 2017, simultaneous substitution is no longer allowed during the big game. This means that viewers tuning to the Canadian channel airing the game see Canadians ads, while those tuning to the US channel see the American ads.
What about Super Bowl LIII?
On February 3, 2019, Canadians will be able to watch US commercials – starting at kickoff – if they subscribe to the US station broadcasting the game (CBS for Super Bowl LIII).
Please keep in mind that the US commercials will only be available during the game (from the kick-off to the final play) and not during the pre- or post-game shows.
