French-language Vocal Music on Radio: Environmental Scan

Summary

At the Commission’s request, Danielle Desjardins, Media and Culture Consultant, has prepared a report on the state of affairs of French-language vocal music on the radio.

As the contextual backdrop for this report, the author provides a brief chronological overview of French-language vocal music and of its presence on the radio. The author also depicts the environment in which the Québec music industry strives as well as the new platforms for the broadcast and distribution of music.

In order to profile the French-language private commercial radio sector, the author provides a financial overview of the sector, lists the various musical formats in use and sets out listenership trends and audience migration. The author further outlines production and sales for the Québec music industry and also paints a portrait of selected Québécois music artists as well as, among other things, of their revenue streams. Lastly, the author examines Québécois cultural practices, from music consumption and discovery to concert attendance.
