Subject: Introduction of residential and business telephone services in Atlin, BC by Northwestel Inc. – request for extension to provide responses

On 9 April 2024, the Canadian Radio-Television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) staff sent the Taku River Tlingit First Nation (TRTFN) a request for information (RFI) in relation to the transition of residential and business telephone services in Atlin, BC from TELUS Communications Inc. to Northwestel Inc. (Northwestel) The CRTC was seeking information from the community to determined whether Northwestel’s proposals meet the needs of the community and whether there continues to be any concerns.

On 5 May 2024, CRTC staff received a request (via email copied on Northwestel) to extend the 24 April 2024 filing date for the RFI response to 31 July 2024.

In making its request, the TRTFN indicated that it required the extension to i) collect, collate and analyse billing information samples for periods up to June 2024, ii) consult with Northwestel on the information provided by these billing samples, and iii) provide its finding to the CRTC.

Given the impact on the community of this transition of services, it is important for the CRTC to allow the opportunity to provide responses to ensure a complete and comprehensive public record. Further, Northwestel’s proposals currently have interim approval from the CRTCFootnote1 such that a delay in filing the response would not impact the availability or offering of services in the community.

Accordingly, CRTC staff agrees to the requested extension. As such, the TRTFN is to provide its responses to the request for information by 31 July 2024. Northwestel has 10 days to file a reply to the information submitted by the TRTFN.

Sincerely,
