Subject: Expedited treatment of Part 1 application 2024-0431-7
Bev Kirshenblatt,
The Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) filed the above-noted application related to the broadcasting licence of the English-language radio programming undertaking CFWH-FM in Whitehorse, Yukon Territory by adding a new FM rebroadcasting transmitter in Carmacks, Yukon Territory. The licensee wishes to amend the authorized contours of its AM rebroadcasting CBQF Carmacks, Yukon Territory, in order to convert CBQF to the FM band.
The new FM rebroadcasting transmitter (CBQF-FM) would operate on frequency 105.1 MHz (286A) with a maximum effective radiated power (ERP) of 852 watts, an average ERP of 550 watts, and an effective height of the antenna above average terrain (EHAAT) of -178.2 metres. The licensee states that the proposed FM transmitter will allow it to replace the current timeworn AM antenna and transmitter tower (CBQF Carmacks) and to provide an improved signal in the region of Carmacks, Yukon Territory.
The licensee states that the AM antenna is 50 years old and needs to be replaced as it has reached the end of its life cycle. It further states that given the advanced age and timeworn condition of the existing antenna, listeners in Carmacks, Yukon Territory are exposed to a high risk of signal loss.
Therefore, the CBC is asking the Commission to process this application as soon as possible in order to allow for the implementation of the new FM antenna in the Fall of 2024, before the weather conditions deteriorate in this remote area.
The applicant’s request for an expedited treatment of the application is approved. Accordingly, the timetable for the process will be as follows:
- Any interested parties may file an intervention by 25 October 2024.
- CBC may file a reply to any interventions received by 31 October 2024.
A copy of this letter and all related correspondence will be added to the public record of the proceeding.
Yours sincerely,
