RE: Application seeking removal of Fox News from the List of non-Canadian programming services and stations authorized for distribution in Canada
Dear Helen Kennedy,
I am writing in respect of Egale Canada’s application seeking removal of Fox News from the List of non-Canadian programming services and stations authorized for distribution in Canada.
As evidenced by the more than 7,000 interventions filed in response to its publication, the application raises issues of great importance to Canadians. While many of the interventions shared Egale’s concerns, others expressed opposing views. Almost all agreed that the application raises serious concerns relating to the protection of and respect for fundamental Canadian rights and freedoms.
The Commission has carefully considered the thousands of interventions submitted. In doing so, it has become clear that the current decades-old regulatory approach for overseeing non-Canadian television services requires a review. Such a review would ensure that the Commission’s determinations on non-Canadian services are consistent, fair and transparent.
A public consultation on the regulatory approach for overseeing non-Canadian television services will start in the coming months. Egale’s participation, and the participation of all interested parties, will be essential.
The Commission will conduct the regulatory approach review first and will then assess Egale’s specific application using the updated approach.
If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact Scott Shortliffe, Executive Director of Broadcasting, at scott.shortliffe@crtc.gc.ca.
Yours sincerely,
Claude Doucet
Secretary General
