RE: Introduction of a three-digit abbreviated dialing code for mental health crisis and suicide prevention services, Telecom Notice of Consultation CRTC 2021-191 – Procedural request from the Government of the Northwest Territories

With the issuance of Telecom Notice of Consultation CRTC 2021-191, Footnote1 the Commission initiated a proceeding to establish the need for the implementation of a national three-digit code for mental health crisis and suicide prevention services, to identify the existing barriers to the establishment of such a code and, if necessary, to determine how these barriers can be overcome.

On 25 March 2022, the Commission received a letter from the Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT), in which it requested to be considered as a party in the Telecom Notice of Consultation CRTC 2021-191 proceeding. The GNWT submitted that it would be important that views from the North be considered in this proceeding, and provided comments to be added to the record of the proceeding.

Staff considers that it would be appropriate to consider the GNWT as a party to this proceeding and to include its comments on the record, as this would help ensure that the views of all Canadians, including those living in the North, are being considered as part of this proceeding. Accordingly, the comments filed by the GNWT are added to the record of Telecom Notice of Consultation CRTC 2021-191.

In order to provide all parties to Telecom Notice of Consultation CRTC 2021-191 an opportunity to respond to the GNWT’s comments, parties may file comments strictly limited to the GNWT’s comments by 5 April 2022.

Yours sincerely,
