Re : Extension of time for Inuit TV Network to file a an application for mandatory distribution as part of the digital basic service for the service Inuit TV

In Broadcasting Notice of Consultation 2022-252, published on 21 September 2022, the Commission announced that it would consider, among other things, an application filed by Nunavut Independent Television Network (NITV) for a broadcasting licence to operate the currently exempt national, Indigenous-language discretionary service Uvagut TV as a licensed service and to obtain mandatory distribution on the digital basic service of broadcasting distribution undertakings across Canada, pursuant to paragraph 9(1)(h) of the Broadcasting Act.

In an intervention dated 7 November 2022 submitted as part of this proceeding, you indicated that Inuit TV Network intended to submit its own application for the mandatory distribution on the digital basic service for the service Inuit TV but decided against it as you had hoped to negotiate a merger or a partnership with NITV.

The Commission has published an addendum to Broadcasting Notice of Consultation 2022-252 announcing the withdrawal of NITV's application from the 10 January 2023 non-appearing hearing. The Commission determined that given the issues raised in the written interventions, it would be more appropriate to consider that application at a future public hearing.

In a letter dated 16 December 2022, Commission staff advised Inuit TV that if it wished to file its application for mandatory distribution on the digital basic, it had until 27 January 2023 to do so.

Further to this letter, Inuit TV requested in a correspondence addressed to Commission staff dated 21 December 2022, an extension to its filing deadline to 10 February 2023 given the holiday season.

In the circumstances, staff extends the deadline to 9 February 2023 for Inuit TV to file such an application to be considered at the same time as the NITV application.

Please note that all information provided, with the exception of information for which confidentiality has been requested and granted, will be placed on the public record for this application once it is published and will be made available for public examination.
