Re: Update on Nunavut Independent Television Network's application (application 2021-0527-0) – deadline extended

In Broadcasting Notice of Consultation 2022-252, published on 21 September 2022, the Commission announced that it would consider, among other things, an application filed by Nunavut Independent Television Network (NITV) for a broadcasting licence to operate the currently exempt national, Indigenous-language discretionary service Uvagut TV as a licensed service and for mandatory distribution of the service on the digital basic service of broadcasting distribution undertakings across Canada, pursuant to paragraph 9(1)(h) of the Broadcasting Act.

In light of the concerns raised in this proceeding, the Commission published an addendum to Broadcasting Notice of Consultation 2022-252, announcing the withdrawal of NITV's application from the 10 January 2023 non-appearing hearing. The Commission determined that given the issues raised in the written interventions, it would be more appropriate to consider the application at a future public hearing.

In a letter dated 16 December 2022, Commission staff advised NITV that if it wished to update its application for mandatory distribution on the digital basic service, it had until 27 January 2023 to do so. In addition, in a separate letter of the same date, Inuit TV was advised that if it wishes to file an application as indicated in its intervention, it should do so by 27 January 2023.

In a letter dated 21 December 2022, Inuit TV requested an extension of time until 10 February 2023 to prepare its application. Staff has extended the deadline to 9 February 2023.

Accordingly, NITV may also have until 9 February to file any updates to its application that it wishes to file.

Please note that all information provided, with the exception of information for which confidentiality has been requested and granted, will be placed on the public record for this application once it is published and will be made available for public examination.
