Re: Broadcasting Notice of Consultation CRTC 2022-252 - Procedural request regarding the application by Nunavut Independent Television Network to receive mandatory distribution as part of the digital basic service for its discretionary service Uvagut TV
On 7 November 2022, Inuit TV Network (Inuit TV) filed a procedural request in which it requested that the Commission:
- suspend the application by Nunavut Independent Television Network (NITV) for a period of 30 days to give NITV time to work with other interested stakeholders on a revised proposal that better serves the needs of all Canada’s Inuit communities; and
- should such negotiations fail, issue an open call for competing applications for mandatory carriage of a national, Indigenous-language discretionary service for these communities.
Today the Commission has published Notice of Consultation CRTC 2022-252-1 announcing the withdrawal of NITV's application for a broadcasting licence to operate the currently exempt national, Indigenous-language discretionary service Uvagut TV as a licensed service, and for the service to be granted mandatory distribution as part of the digital basic service of broadcasting distribution undertakings across Canada, pursuant to paragraph 9(1)(h) of the Broadcasting Act. The Commission has determined that given the issues raised in the written interventions, it would be more appropriate to consider the application at a future public hearing.
In light of the above, the Commission considers your request to suspend NITV's application for a period of 30 days to allow NITV time to work with other interested stakeholders moot.
Yours sincerely,
