CJWE-FM Calgary – New transmitter at Peigan/Blood Reserve Porcupine Hills
- The Commission approves the application by Aboriginal Multi-Media Society of Alberta to amend the broadcasting licence for the Type B Native (Indigenous) radio programming undertaking CJWE-FM Calgary in order to add the transmitter CFWE-FM-2 Peigan/Blood Reserve Porcupine Hills, currently a transmitter of CFWE-FM-4 Edmonton. The Commission did not receive any interventions regarding this application.
- The transmitter will continue to operate at 89.3 MHz (channel 207B) with an average effective radiated power (ERP) of 2,300 watts (maximum ERP of 10,200 watts with an effective height of antenna above average terrain of 273 metres). The licensee stated that it wished to broadcast the signal of CJWE-FM rather than CFWE-FM-4 on CFWE-FM-2 as the Calgary station was recently launched as a service specifically targeting the Treaty 7 area, including Peigan/Blood Reserve Porcupine Hills, and broadcasts programming and a specific language geared to that community.
- Pursuant to section 22(1) of the Broadcasting Act, this authority will only be effective when the Department of Industry (the Department) notifies the Commission that its technical requirements have been met and that a broadcasting certificate will be issued.
- The transmitter must be in operation by no later than 12 December 2020. To request an extension, the licensee must submit a written request to the Commission at least 60 days before that date, using the form available on the Commission’s website.
