CBAF-FM-5 Halifax and its transmitter CBAF-FM-14 Sydney – Technical changes

The Commission approves the application by the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation relating to technical changes that were made in 2013 to the authorized contours of CBAF-FM-14 Sydney, Nova Scotia, a rebroadcasting transmitter of the French-language radio programming undertaking CBAF-FM-5 Halifax. The licensee stated that while the changes were implemented in 2013, it had only been made aware of them recently. The licensee therefore notified the Commission to correct the oversight. The Commission did not receive any interventions regarding this application.
Replacement of the transmitter resulted in the average effective radiated power (ERP) decreasing from 61,700 to 17,817 watts (maximum ERP decreasing from 100,000 to 25,636 watts). The transmitter class changed from C to B, and the effective height of the antenna above average terrain increased from 122.5 to 122.8 metres. All other technical parameters remained unchanged.
Pursuant to section 22(1) of the Broadcasting Act, this authority will only be effective when the Department of Industry notifies the Commission that its technical requirements have been met and that a broadcasting certificate will be issued.
The Commission reminds the licensee of the importance of fulfilling its obligations in a timely manner.
