CHFA-10-FM Edmonton and its transmitter CHFA-5-FM Grande Prairie –Technical changes
- The Commission approves the application by the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) to amend the broadcasting licence for the French-language radio programming undertaking CHFA-10-FM Edmonton, Alberta, which is part of the Ici Radio-Canada Première (IRCP) network. Specifically, the licensee requested authorization to change the authorized contours of the rebroadcasting transmitter CHFA-5-FM Grande Prairie, Alberta, by relocating the transmitter site, changing the frequency from 90.5 MHz (channel 213) to 103.3 MHz (channel 277) and the class from B to C1, and increasing the average effective radiated power from 5,000 to 25,300 watts and the effective height of the antenna above average terrain from 206.5 to 247.5 metres. The Commission did not receive any interventions in regard to this application.
- The CBC indicated that the station’s rebroadcasting transmitter will be co-located with that of the rebroadcasting transmitter CBXP-FM Grande Prairie, from the English-language Radio One network. It stated that this change in the station’s facilities will allow the IRCP and Radio One services to be combined on the same antenna, ensuring better coverage in Grande Prairie and surrounding areas, as well as reducing costs.
- Pursuant to section 22(1) of the Broadcasting Act, this authority will only be effective when the Department of Industry notifies the Commission that its technical requirements have been met and that a broadcasting certificate will be issued.
- The transmitter must be operational with implemented technical changes at the earliest possible date and in any event no later than 24 months from the date of this decision, unless a request for an extension of time is approved by the Commission before 12 December 2019. In order to ensure that such a request is processed in a timely manner, it should be submitted in writing at least 60 days before that date.
