CKXU-FM Lethbridge – Technical changes
- The Commission approves the application by CKXU Radio Society to change the authorized contours of the radio programming undertaking CKXU-FM Lethbridge, Alberta, by relocating its transmitter site, changing its class from A1 to A, and increasing the effective radiated power from 125 to 2,900 watts and the effective height of the antenna above average terrain from 14.5 to 143.2 metres. All other technical parameters will remain unchanged. The Commission received an intervention supporting this application.
- The licensee submitted that the proposed changes were necessary to overcome challenges arising from new urban expansion which has made it impossible for CKXU-FM’s signal to effectively reach the community. It further stated that the changes would provide the listeners of Lethbridge with a reliable FM signal and allow the station to better fulfil its mandate to showcase and support cultural diversity in the Southern Alberta region.
- Pursuant to section 22(1) of the Broadcasting Act, this authority will only be effective when the Department of Industry notifies the Commission that its technical requirements have been met and that a broadcasting certificate will be issued.
- The station’s transmitter must be operational with implemented technical changes at the earliest possible date and in any event no later than 24 months from the date of this decision, unless a request for an extension of time is approved by the Commission before 7 November 2019. In order to ensure that such a request is processed in a timely manner, it should be submitted in writing at least 60 days before that date.
