Application 2017-0402-3
CFWE-FM-4 Edmonton – New FM transmitter in Grande Prairie
- The Commission approves the application by Aboriginal Multi-Media Society of Alberta to amend the broadcasting licence for the Type B Native radio programming undertaking CFWE-FM-4 Edmonton in order to operate an FM rebroadcasting transmitter at Grande Prairie. The Commission did not receive any interventions regarding this application.
- The new transmitter will operate at 105.7 MHz (channel 289C1) with an effective radiated power of 100,000 watts (non-directional antenna with an effective height of antenna above average terrain of 243.6 metres).
- The licensee stated that the new transmitter would provide service to Indigenous residents in Grande Prairie and Grande Prairie County, including those living off reserve, and would allow it to decommission two of its low-power transmitters currently serving Horse Lake Reserve and Duncan’s Band Reserve. The licensee added that the transmitter would help increase awareness of issues, events and news from the region and that exposing the population to its Indigenous languages would have a very positive effect.
- Pursuant to section 22(1) of the Broadcasting Act, this authority will only be effective when the Department of Industry notifies the Commission that its technical requirements have been met and that a broadcasting certificate will be issued.
- The transmitter must be operational at the earliest possible date and in any event no later than 24 months from the date of this decision, unless a request for an extension of time is approved by the Commission before 6 September 2019. In order to ensure that such a request is processed in a timely manner, it should be submitted in writing at least 60 days before that date.
