Re: Request for additional information - Broadcasting Notice of Consultation CRTC 2015-421

The Commission is in receipt of a letter dated 13 October 2015 from the Public Interest Advocacy Centre (PIAC) requesting that additional information be made available as a part of the Commission’s review of Local and Community Programming, outlined in Broadcasting Notice of Consultation 2015-421 (BNC 2015-421).  In particular, PIAC asked the Commission to request that local television stations provide:

  1. Program logs for a period of two (2) weeks which demonstrate how local stations are currently meeting their local programming requirements; and
  2. Aggregated revenues and costs associated with local news broadcast by local stations.

The Commission notes that it requires most licensed broadcasters to provide program logs. Consequently, the Commission has released tables providing the titles and program category of programming broadcast by conventional television stations in order to fulfill their local programming obligations for the month of April 2015Footnote 1 .

However, please note that these program logs have not been audited. Additionally, the tables do not include programs produced by locally-based independent producers. As such, certain stations and services may not appear in the tables. The tables are therefore provided for information purposes only and should not be used to determine compliance with conditions of licence related to local programming.

With respect to PIAC’s request for aggregated revenues and costs associated with local news broadcast by local stations, the Commission notes that it has already released, on 20 October 2015, aggregated financial data for local programming by market size, including total revenues and costs for local news. Accordingly, the information requested by PIAC has already been placed on the public record since the 13 October 2015 letter.

Sincerely,

John Traversy
Secretary General
