Application 2015-1031-3
CKUA-FM Edmonton and it transmitter CKUA-FM-5 Peace River - Technical changes
- The Commission approves the application by CKUA Radio Foundation (CKUA Radio) to change the authorized contours of CKUA-FM-5 Peace River, Alberta, a transmitter of the English-language specialty commercial radio programming undertaking CKUA-FM Edmonton, Alberta, by changing the transmitter class from C to B, by decreasing the effective radiated power from 100,000 to 22,000 watts, and by decreasing the effective height of antenna above average terrain from 167.5 to 155.7 metres. All other technical parameters will remain unchanged. The Commission did not receive any interventions in connection with this application.
- CKUA Radio stated that the changes are necessary since they, coupled with a conversion to a solid state transmitter, will save it hundreds of thousands of dollars over the life of the new transmitter, and will bring signal coverage more in line with locations of its primary audience community. The licensee added that the new contour signal will continue to provide optimal reception to Peace River and a number of surrounding communities, but will eliminate optimal signal from much of the non-populated region.
- The Commission reminds the licensee that, pursuant to section 22(1) of the Broadcasting Act, this authority will only be effective when the Department of Industry notifies the Commission that its technical requirements have been met and that a broadcasting certificate will be issued.
