Re: Review of programming on G4 (case # 496398)

Dear Ms. Wheeler:
In preparation for the renewals of the English-language television groups, Commission staff has been conducting an informal review of the programming of several specialty services. Through that review, it has come to our attention that some of the programming on G4 (formerly known as G4techTV) may not strictly respect the nature of service definition for that service.

Decision 2000-454 sets out G4’s nature of service as follows: “the licensee shall provide a
national English-language Category 1 service consisting exclusively of programming related to
computing, technology and the Internet”. (bold added for emphasis)

After a review of your broadcast schedule, it would appear that several of your programs are not consistent with your nature of service, such as “Mantracker”, “Which Way To…” and “The Office”.

In light of these concerns, could you please explain your programming strategies, as well as how you feel your programs, including the ones noted above, fit within your nature of service definition?

All correspondence must be submitted by using our On-line services available on our website via the following link: https://applications.crtc.gc.ca/crtcsubmissionmu/forms/radiodiffusion-broadcasting.aspx?lang=e

In the Description box, please repeat the “subject” line for all related correspondence concerning this matter and quote case # 496398.

Please be advised that this letter and all related correspondence will be placed on the public file (case # 496398).

Yours sincerely,
