AMET-TV – Licence amendment

1.

The Commission approves the application by Afromedia Communications Incorporated (Afromedia) relating to the broadcasting licence for the national, general interest ethnic Category 2 specialty programming undertaking known as AMET-TV. Afromedia proposed to amend AMET-TV's condition of licence relating to the language of the programming to be broadcast1 so that it may broadcast programming in the various languages spoken across the African continent, and not only in the Yoruba, Swahili, Hausa, Twi, Fante and Arabic languages. The Commission did not receive any interventions in connection with this application.

2.

Afromedia stated that there are numerous other languages beyond those in which the ethnic service AMET-TV is currently authorized to broadcast, and argued that the proposed change would allow AMET-TV to offer a wider variety of third-language programming from more sources.

3.

Accordingly, the condition of licence relating to the language of the programming to be broadcast by AMET-TV shall read as follows (change is in bold):

6. The licensee shall devote no more than 70% of the programming broadcast during the broadcast week to programming in the English language and no more than 20% of the programming broadcast during the broadcast week to programming in the French language. Not less than 10% of the programming broadcast during the broadcast week will be in the various languages spoken across the African continent.
