1. Across Canada
Application No. 2008-1642-3
Application by Canwest Media Inc., on behalf of itself (the limited partner) and Canwest Television GP Inc. (the general partner), carrying on business as Canwest Television Limited Partnership (Canwest) for suspension of the conditions of licence respecting cross-media ownership, in light of the Canadian Broadcast Standards Council's (CBSC) Journalistic Independence Code, which was approved in Broadcasting Public Notice CRTC 2008-95, 20 October 2008 (Public Notice 2008-95).
In Licence renewals for the television stations controlled by Global, Decision CRTC 2001-458, 2 August 2001, the Commission imposed a condition of licence requiring Canwest adhere to its Statement of Principles and Practices to ensure the independence and separation of newsrooms of its television services and affiliated newspapers. In that decision, the Commission also stated that it would be prepared to consider suspending the conditions of licence, if the licensee, as a member in good standing with the CBSC, enters into an agreement with the CBSC, resulting in the licensee complying with an industry-wide code of professional conduct approved by the Commission
As a result of Public Notice 2008-95, the applicant proposes suspending the following conditions of licence through the following amendment indicated by the bold, underlined text:

3. The licensee shall adhere to the provisions of its Statement of Principles and Practices, as set out in Appendix 1 to Licence renewals for the television stations controlled by Global, Decision CRTC 2001-458, 2 August 2001, including the establishment of an independent monitoring committee as set out in Appendix A to its Statement of Principles and Practices. The application of this condition of licence will be suspended, in light of the Journalistic Independence Code, as long as the licensee is a member in good standing of the Canadian Broadcast Standards Council.
