Denial of applications proposing radio services for Fort McMurray, Alberta
|
|
The Commission considered applications related to radio services in Fort McMurray in a proceeding that included a public hearing held in Edmonton beginning 19 June 2006. In this decision, the Commission denies six applications proposing to establish new radio stations to serve Fort McMurray.

On 22 July 2005, the Commission issued Call for applications for a broadcasting licence to carry on radio programming undertakings to serve Fort McMurray, Alberta, Broadcasting Public Notice CRTC 2005-70 (the Call). The Call announced that the Commission had received an application for a broadcasting licence to provide a commercial radio programming undertaking to serve Fort McMurray and called for applications from other parties wishing to obtain a licence to serve this area.

In response to the Call, the Commission received eight applications for broadcasting licenses to serve Fort McMurray. Those applications, together with the application that prompted the call, were considered at the 19 June 2006 Public Hearing in Edmonton.

In Licensing of new radio stations to serve Fort McMurray, Alberta - Introduction to Broadcasting Decisions CRTC 2006-627 to 2006-630, Broadcasting Public Notice CRTC 2006-145, published today, the Commission concluded that the Fort McMurray radio market would be able to absorb, without an undue negative impact on existing stations, the introduction of three new FM radio stations to serve Fort McMurray.

In Adult Contemporary FM radio station in Fort McMurray, Broadcasting Decision CRTC 2006-627, 15 November 2006, the Commission has approved an application by Harvard Broadcasting Inc. for a broadcasting licence to operate a new English-language, commercial FM radio station to serve Fort McMurray at 103.7 MHz.

In Classic Hits FM radio station in Fort McMurray, Broadcasting Decision CRTC 2006-628, 15 November 2006, the Commission has also approved an application by Newcap Inc. for a broadcasting licence to operate a new English-language, commercial FM radio station to serve Fort McMurray at 100.5 MHz.

Finally, in Christian music FM radio station in Fort McMurray, Broadcasting Decision CRTC 2006-629, 15 November 2006, the Commission has also approved an application by King's Kids Promotions Outreach Ministries Inc. for a broadcasting licence to operate a new English-language, low-power, commercial specialty FM radio station to serve Fort McMurray at 91.1 MHz.

In this decision, the Commission denies the six remaining applications, which are listed in the appendix.
