Réseau Info Sports - Licence amendment

In this decision, the Commission approves an application to amend the broadcasting licence for the Category 1 specialty programming undertaking known as Réseau Info Sports, in order to delete subsection (f) from condition of licence no. 1 pertaining to the nature of service.

Background

1.

In Réseau Info Sports - a new specialty service, Decision CRTC 2000-465, 24 November and 14 December 2000 (Decision 2000-465), the Commission approved an application by Le Réseau des sports (RDS) inc. for a broadcasting licence to operate a national, French-language Category 1 specialty programming undertaking to be known as Réseau Info Sports (RIS). In addition to the terms and conditions of licence common to all new Category 1 specialty services, as set out in Introductory statement - Licensing of new digital pay and specialty services, Public Notice CRTC 2000-171, 14 December 2000, the Commission imposed conditions that are specific to the new RIS service and that are set out in the appendix to Decision 2000-465.

The application

2.

Le Réseau des sports (RDS) inc. filed an application with the Commission to amend RIS's broadcasting licence, in order to delete subsection (f) from condition of licence no. 1 pertaining to the nature of service, which is set out in the appendix to Decision 2000-465. Subsection (f) requires the licensee to limit the broadcast of sporting events to weekends, i.e. to Saturdays and Sundays. In its application, the licensee stated that it would continue to comply with all the other requirements with respect to the live broadcast of sports events.

Interventions

3.

The Commission received one intervention in support of the application, one intervention opposing the application and one comment. The intervention in opposition and the comment did not specifically address the application. The licensee did not reply to the interventions.

Commission's determination

4.

The Commission's examination of this application did not raise any concerns. Accordingly, the Commission approves the application by Le Réseau des sports (RDS) inc. to amend the broadcasting licence for the national, Category 1 specialty programming undertaking known as Réseau Info Sports, in order to delete subsection (f), which requires the licensee to limit the broadcast of sporting events to weekends (Saturdays and Sundays), from condition of licence no. 1 pertaining to the nature of service, as set out in the appendix to Decision 2000-465. The Commission notes that all other conditions of licence remain unchanged and continue to apply.
