Broadcasting Decision CRTC 2005-332

  Ottawa, 20 July 2005
  CKUA Radio Foundation
Edmonton and Fort McMurray, Alberta
  Application 2005-0050-6
Broadcasting Public Notice CRTC 2005-40
29 April 2005

CKUA-FM Edmonton and its transmitter CKUA-FM-11 Fort McMurray - Technical change

1. The Commission approves the application by CKUA Radio Foundation to change the authorized contours of its transmitter CKUA-FM-11 Fort McMurray, by increasing the effective radiated power from 16 watts to 2,500 watts and by decreasing the antenna height to 74.1 metres.
2. In support of its application, the licensee stated that the Fort McMurray region has expanded rapidly and that the unprotected status of the channel at which CKUA-FM-1 currently operates no longer allows the transmitter to cover the entire area. The licensee also submitted that it needs to operate at protected status because it broadcasts Alberta's Emergency Public Warning System.
3. The Commission notes that the above-mentioned changes will result in a significant increase of the coverage area. The Commission also notes that, as a result of the increase in power, CKUA-FM-1's status will change from that of a low-power unprotected service to that of a regular class A FM station.
4. The Commission did not receive any interventions in connection with this application.
5. The Commission reminds the licensee that, pursuant to section 22(1) of the Broadcasting Act, this authority will only be effective when the Department of Industry notifies the Commission that its technical requirements have been met, and that a broadcasting certificate will be issued.
