Telecom Order CRTC 2004-318

  Ottawa, 22 September 2004

TELUS Communications Inc.

Reference: Tariff Notices 144 and 144A

Customer-specific directory assistance service

1.

The Commission received an application by TELUS Communications Inc. (TCI), dated 25 May 2004 and amended on 17 August 2004, to revise Special Facilities Tariff item 201, Customer-specific Directory Assistance Service (DAS), in order to introduce a short message directory assistance service (SMS-DAS) component for the remaining duration of an existing five-year customer-specific DAS contract.

2.

TCI noted that the SMS-DAS component would permit the customer's resale wireless service provider customers to receive a short message which provides a requested DAS telephone number, as well as the name and address if available, that could be viewed on the end-subscribers' digital handset. TCI noted that, in addition, the same directory listing information would be provided to such end-subscribers by a TCI automated voice system or a TCI call processing agent. TCI submitted that reverse directory search using telephone number or address would not be provisioned in this service. Finally, TCI stated that the SMS-DAS component would only be available to end-subscribers served by digital wireless technology and with digital handsets.

3.

TCI also proposed, among other things, the withdrawal of the SMS-DAS technological trial concurrent with the approval of the SMS-DAS component under item 201.

4.

The Commission received no comments with respect to the application.

5.

The Commission approves TCI's application. The revisions take effect as of the date of this order.
