Telecom Order CRTC 2003-234

  Ottawa, 5 June 2003

Expansion of local calling areas

1.

The Commission received an application by Sogetel inc. (Sogetel), dated 18 October 2002, to include in its General Tariff item 2.1, Primary Exchange Service and Extended Area Service, the general principles, criteria, and process for creating expanded local calling areas.

2.

In Framework for the expansion of local calling areas, Telecom Decision CRTC 2002-56, 12 September 2002 (Decision 2002-56), the Commission established the principles for expanding local calling areas. Although the Commission did not require that the principles established in Decision 2002-56 be included in the tariff pages approved by the Commission, the Commission does not consider Sogetel's proposal to include the general principles, criteria and process for creating expanded local calling areas within its General Tariff to be inappropriate.

3.

The Commission notes however, that in Decision 2002-56, it identified certain of its determinations as preliminary. Accordingly, the Commission directs Sogetel, in the event that the preliminary determinations are revised as a result of the follow-up proceeding, to file proposed tariff pages to reflect the modifications.

4.

The Commission received no comments with respect to the application.

5.

The Commission approves Sogetel's application. The revisions take effect as of the date of this order.

6.

Sogetel is to issue revised tariff pages forthwith to reflect these changes.
