Public Notice CRTC 2002-10

Licence amendment for Lonestar - addition of program categories

The Commission approves an application to amend the licence for Lonestar by adding to the list of program categories that may be broadcast by the service.

1.

The Commission received an application by 3722384 Canada Limited and Global Television Network Inc., partners in a general partnership, to amend the condition of licence 1 (b) for the Lonestar Category 2 specialty television service in order to add program category 14 (Infomercials, promotional and corporate videos) to the list of categories from which the licensee may draw its programming.

2.

The Commission did not receive any interventions in connection with this application.

3.

Lonestar was formerly known as Adventure.

4.

In Adventure, Decision CRTC 2000-571, 24 November 2000 and 14 December 2000, the Commission imposed the following conditions of licence defining the nature of service that Lonestar could provide:

1. (a) The licensee shall provide a national English-language Category 2 specialty television service devoted to action and adventure programming. Its program schedule will run the gamut from contemporary "popcorn" action and adventure films and series, to classical westerns, rodeo and western horse shows.

(b) The programming must be drawn exclusively from the following categories, as set out in Schedule I to the Specialty Services Regulations, 1990:5b, 7a, 7b, 7c, 7d, 7e, 7f, 7g, 8a, 11, 12 and 13.

5.

The Commission notes that most specialty services are authorized to broadcast programming from category 14 and finds no reason not to allow such programming to be broadcast by Lonestar. Accordingly, the Commission approves the application by 3722384 Canada Limited and Global Television Network Inc., partners in a general partnership, to amend Lonestar's condition of licence 1 (b) to read as follows:

The programming must be drawn exclusively from the following categories, as set out in Schedule I to the Specialty Services Regulations, 1990: 5b, 7a, 7b, 7c, 7d, 7e, 7f, 7g, 8a, 11, 12, 13 and 14.
