Order CRTC 2000-172

Ottawa, 7 March 2000
Service provider portability for 500 and 900 service access codes abandoned

Reference: 8698-C12-01/99

The Commission is concluding consideration of portability for 500 and 900 service access codes.

1.

In Telecom Public Notice CRTC 99-12, the Commission directed the CRTC Interconnection Steering Committee’s (CISC) Canadian Steering Committee on Numbering (CSCN) to report on the potential establishment of a North American portability pool for Service Access Codes (SAC) 500 and 900 numbers by 4 February 2000.

2.

In August 1999, the CISC CSCN filed its report with the Commission. It noted that the North American Numbering Council (NANC) reported there is no interest in providing 500/900 service provider portability at this time. The NANC is a committee mandated by the U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC) that examined the potential of introducing 500/900 portability in North America. The FCC agreed with the NANC recommendation that all work on this issue should cease.

3.

In its report to the Commission, the CSCN concurred with the conclusions of the NANC, indicating that a similar lack of interest in pursuing the issue exists in Canada. The CRTC agrees with the CSCN recommendation to suspend consideration of the issue of implementation of 500/900 service provider portability at this time.
