Ottawa, 3 November 2000

CRTC denies proposals to introduce or increase minimum late payment charges
Reference: Tariff Notices Island Tel 545, NBTel 847 and NewTel 639
The Commission denies MTT's applications on behalf of Island Tel to increase its minimum late payment charge to $1.25 and of NBTel and NewTel to introduce a minimum late payment charge of $1.25 each.
1.
On 1 September 2000, Maritime Tel & Tel Limited (MTT) filed the above tariff notices proposing to increase the minimum late payment charge for Island Telecom Inc. from $1 to $1.25 and to introduce a minimum late payment charge of $1.25 for NBTel Inc. and NewTel Communications Inc.
2.
MTT stated that since the company currently has a minimum late payment charge of $1.25, this filing would standardize this charge for the four carriers that make up Aliant Telecom Inc.
3.
The company submitted that the proposed charges will serve to help reduce the number of late payment charges levied by the companies by making the charge more meaningful to customers. The company noted that the proposed minimum late payment charge is reasonable and avoiding the charge is entirely within the customers' control.
4.
The Commission considers that the current rates provide adequate compensation for late payments.
5.
Accordingly, the Commission denies Tariff Notices 545, 847 and 639.
