GTV: The Girls' Network

 

On 24 November 2000, the Commission approved a Category 2 specialty television service to be known as GTV: The Girls' Network. The terms and conditions generally applicable to Category 2 services are set out in the public notice accompanying this and other decisions released today.

 

Conditions of licence

 

The licence, when issued, will expire 31 August 2007 and will be subject to the following conditions as well as to those set out in both Public Notice CRTC 2000-171 andin the licence to be issued.

 

Nature of service

 

a) The licensee shall provide a national English-language Category 2 specialty television service targeted to girls, aged 6 to 11, and to young women, aged 12 to 17. The licensee shall provide entertainment and leisure programming in a positive environment that is sensitive to the development and needs of girls and young women. Programming for both age groups will focus on lifestyle, relationships, information, sports, talk and entertainment programs on a variety of topics that are appropriate for girls and young women. The licensee shall select games, fashion, music and lifestyle programs to appeal specifically to this audience.

 

b) The programming must be drawn exclusively from the following categories, as set out in Schedule I to the Specialty Services Regulations, 1990:
2a, 5b, 6b, 7a, 7b, 7c, 7d, 7e, 7f, 7g, 8b, 8c, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13 and 14.

 

c) No more than one feature film (category 7d) shall be broadcast in each broadcast day. This film may be broadcast only once during the evening broadcast period.

 

d) No more than 1 hour 30 minutes of programming from category 7a shall be broadcast in each broadcast day.

 

e) No more than 1 hour of programming from category 7b shall be broadcast in each broadcast day.

 

Definitions

 

Broadcast day refers to the 24-hour period beginning 6 a.m. each day.
