The Jazz Channel

 

On 24 November 2000, the Commission approved a Category 2 specialty television service to be known as The Jazz Channel. The terms and conditions generally applicable to Category 2 services are set out in the public notice accompanying this and other decisions released today.

 

Conditions of licence

 

The licence, when issued, will expire 31 August 2007 and will be subject to the following conditions as well as to those set out in both Public Notice CRTC 2000-171 andin the licence to be issued.

 

Nature of service

 

a) The licensee shall provide a national English-language Category 2 music video specialty television service dedicated to jazz and blues and related programming.

 

b) The programming must be drawn exclusively from the following categories, as set out in Schedule I to the Specialty Services Regulations, 1990:
2b, 8a, 8b and 8c.

 

c) No less than 85% of all programming broadcast during the broadcast week shall be drawn from category 8b.

 

d) No less than 90% of all musical selections broadcast during the broadcast week shall be drawn from content subcategory 34 (jazz and blues) as set out in Public Notice CRTC 2000-14, as amended from time to time.

 

Exhibition of Canadian programs

 

With respect to the condition of licence relating to the exhibition of Canadian music video clips as set out in the above-noted public notice (PN 2000-171), the Commission approves the following:

The licensee shall devote to the distribution of Canadian music video clips not less than the following percentages of the total number of music video clips broadcast during each broadcast week:

 

year one 10%

year two 12%

year three 14%

year four 16%

year five 18%

year six 20%

year seven 20%

 

Definitions

 

Broadcast day refers to the 24-hour period beginning 6 a.m. each day.
