Telecom Order CRTC 99-714

 

On 26 February 1996, Northwestel Inc. (Northwestel) filed Tariff Notice 699 proposing to discontinue offering High Frequency Radio Service (HF Radio Service). This service is currently offered in the vicinity of Whitehorse, Fort Nelson and Hay River.

1.Northwestel stated that: (1) costs far exceed revenues for providing this service; (2) the equipment to provide this service is obsolete; and (3) that of the current 25 subscribers of the service, 24 are business customers using an alternate source as their primary means of telecommunication.

 

2.The Commission notes that Northwestel advised current subscribers of its proposal to terminate the service via letter and local newspaper announcement. Further, the Commission notes that no comments were received.

 

3.The Commission notes that Northwestel made several attempts to contact the one residential customer of this service for comment but was unable to obtain a response. The Commission also notes that this residential customer has accumulated no airtime in the last six months.

 

4.In light of the foregoing, the Commission approves Northwestel's proposal to discontinue offering HF Radio Service currently offered in the vicinity of Whitehorse, Fort Nelson and Hay River.
