NORTHERN TELEPHONE LIMITED - LOCAL RATE RESTRUCTURING AND SWITCHING
EQUIPMENT MODERNIZATION PROPOSAL

The Commission has received applications under
Tariff Notices (TNs) 78 and 78A from Northern Telephone Limited (Northern),
dated 27 October 1997 and 30 October 1997, that would provide for local
rate restructuring and a switching equipment modernization program. |
|
Northern proposes to restructure residential
and business local individual line rates, establishing common rates of
$17.45 and $38.65, respectively. In addition, a multi-line service rate of
$38.65 is proposed for Rate Groups 3 to 5. |
|
Northern stated that the revenues generated from the rate
restructuring will be used in their entirety to fund a switching equipment
modernization program to be completed by the end of 1999. |

Northern's applications can be examined at any

In a letter of today's date, Northern is asked
to respond to Commission interrogatories. |
|
Parties wishing to participate in this
proceeding must notify the Commission of their intention to do so by
writing to the Commission at the address noted above by 2 March 1998. |
|
Parties may address interrogatories to Northern. Any such
interrogatories must be filed with the Commission with a copy served on
Northern by 10 March 1998. |
|
Responses to interrogatories are to be filed
with the Commission with a copy served on all registered parties by 25
March 1998. |
|
Northern may file any reply comments by 20 April 1998. |
|
In addition to hard copy filings, parties are
encouraged to file with the Commission electronic versions of their
submissions in accordance with the Commission's Interim Telecom
Guidelines for the Handling of Machine-Readable Files, dated
30 November 1995. The Commission's Internet email address for

When a document is required to be filed or
served by a specific date, the document must be actually received, not

In light of the comment period specified in
this Public Notice, the Commission expects to issue a ruling with respect
to Northern's TNs 78 and 78A during the second quarter of 1998. |
