Decision

Ottawa, 18 December 1998
Decision CRTC 98-526
Canadian Broadcasting Corporation
Across Canada - 199804836
Application processed by
Public Notice CRTC 1998-95
dated 10 September 1998
Increased simultaneous programming on CBC and RDI
1.  The Commission approves the application to amend the broadcasting licence for the CBC's French-language specialty news service le Réseau de l'information (RDI) by slightly increasing the weekly maximum amount of RDI programming to be shown simultaneously on the CBC French-language network.
2.  Currently, RDI's condition of licence No. 11 specifies that:
Notwithstanding section (1), the licensee may engage in the simultaneous distribution of a maximum of two hours of the five-hour weekday news program entitled "Ce matin".
3.  This condition was imposed on the Corporation when RDI was originally licensed, and is intended to ensure that programming on RDI would not be funded through the Parliamentary appropriations intended for the CBC's main network programming.
4.  The amendments requested by the CBC will allow the simultaneous distribution of a 30 minute RDI news program on each of Saturday and Sunday, in addition to the original two hours on weekdays allowed by the original condition.
5.  The Commission is satisfied that the additional simultaneous distribution does not raise concerns about cross-subsidization. Condition of licence No. 11 is therefore replaced with the following:
Notwithstanding subsection (1), the licensee may engage in the simultaneous distribution of a maximum of two (2) hours of a news program on Monday to Friday from 7 a.m. to 9 a.m., Eastern time; and of a maximum of thirty (30) minutes of a news program on each of Saturday and Sunday from 12:00 noon to 12:30 p.m., Eastern time.
Secretary General
