Decision

Ottawa, 10 July 1998
Decision CRTC 98-222
Northern Television Systems Ltd.
Addition of KJUD Juneau, Alaska - Denied
1. Following Public Notice CRTC 1998-48 dated 15 May 1998, the Commission denies the application by Northern Television Systems Ltd. (Northern), for authority to distribute KJUD (ABC/NBC) Juneau, Alaska, as part of a discretionary tier of the Class 3 cable distribution undertaking serving Whitehorse. The signal of KJUD was proposed to be received via a non-Canadian satellite.
2. In denying this application, the Commission has taken into account the fact that the flexibility to receive signals via a non-Canadian satellite sought by Northern would be achieved, if the policy proposal regarding U.S. 4+1 signals announced in Public Notice CRTC 1998-60, dated 23 June 1998 were to be introduced. In that Public Notice, the Commission called for comments on such a policy proposal. In the circumstances, the Commission considers that interested parties should be given a further opportunity to comment on the potential impact of this proposed measure on the Canadian broadcasting system.
