Public Notice CRTC 1997-144
The Commission has received the following application:
1. EASTERN CANADA AND IGLOOLIK, HALL BEACH, POND INLET, ARCTIC BAY, RESOLUTE BAY AND GRISE FIORD, Northwest Territories
Application (199716271) by TMN NETWORKS INC. (The Movie Network) to amend the broadcasting licence of its English-language (Pay Television) programming undertaking known as The Movie Network to be authorized to extend its service area beyond Eastern Canada to include Igloolik, Hall Beach, Pond Inlet, Arctic Bay, Resolute Bay and Grise Fiord, Northwest Territories.
As part of the rationale for the proposed amendment, TMN submits that the Northwest Territories communities are in the service area licensed to Allarcom Pay Television Ltd.'s (APT) programming service known as Superchannel. However, because APT has changed its integrated receiver decoders, the communities are no longer able to receive the Superchannel signal. APT is presently trying to determine the best means of reestablishing service to these communities.
The authorization for the provision of service to the Northwest Territories communities will cease when and if the technology is adjusted to facilitate adequate signal reception of the Superchannel service provided by Allarcom Pay Television Ltd.
TMN has undertaken to cease offering The Movie Network service to the Northwest Territories communities when and if APT's Superchannel service becomes available again in the communities.
