Decision CRTC 97-602
Canadian Broadcasting Corporation
Licence amendment for CBQT-FM
1. Following Public Notice CRTC 1997-106 dated 5 August 1997, the Commission approves the application by the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation to amend the Promise of Performance of the radio programming undertaking CBQT-FM Thunder Bay, to reduce the level of local programming from a minimum of 31 hours each broadcast week to a minimum of 29 hours each broadcast week.
2. The Commission acknowledges the interventions received opposing this application. The interventions expressed similar concerns regarding the importance of reflecting the local community and argued that programming produced in Ottawa or Toronto does not have as much relevance as do locally-produced programs. The Commission notes that in its reply, the CBC stated that it will "continue to provide a strong and relevant local service". In this regard, the CBC indicated that the local communities will continue to be reflected in local morning and afternoon shows, local information update breaks will be broadcast throughout the day and individual stations will make regular, dedicated contributions to the province-wide noon-hour show. The Commission is satisfied with the CBC's reply to the interventions.
