Addition of KIRO-TV to the Lists of Eligible Satellite Services
|
|
1. Following Public Notice CRTC 1997-20 dated 21 February 1997, the Commission approves the application to amend the broadcasting licence to carry on a multiple-channel television and radio broadcasting relay distribution undertaking by adding KIRO-TV (IND) Seattle, Washington to the list of signals that Cancom is authorized to distribute.

2. Cancom requested that this signal be added to Section "A" of the list of Part II Eligible Satellite Services (Part II list) and to the list of Part III Eligible Canadian Satellite Services (Part III Canadian list). However, while the Commission approves the addition of this signal to the Part III Canadian list, it will add KIRO-TV to Section "B" only of the Part II list. In making this decision, the Commission notes that it has, to date, approved the addition of independent U.S. services only to Section "B" of the list, and it is not prepared to depart from this practice.

3. As a result, KIRO-TV may only be distributed in a package with Canadian pay television services by Class 1 undertakings and Class 2 undertakings that have 2,000 or more but less than 6,000 subscribers.

4. The addition of this signal on the Part III Canadian list means that it may also be distributed by Part III undertakings and Class 2 undertakings with fewer than 2,000 subscribers, as part of the basic service or on a discretionary basis.
|
|
5. In approving this application, the Commission is satisfied that the addition of another signal to be packaged with Canadian pay television services will enhance the choice of services offered to subscribers, while providing linkage support for Canadian pay television services and the subsequent contribution they make to the Canadian broadcasting system.

6. In Public Notice CRTC 1997-96 of today's date entitled Revised Lists of Eligible Satellite Services, the Commission has amended the lists to reflect this approval.
|
|
7. The Commission notes that there were no interventions submitted with respect to this application.
|
|
This decision is to be appended to the licence.
