Ottawa, 29 January 1993
Telecom Public Notice CRTC 93-13
BRITISH COLUMBIA TELEPHONE COMPANY - REVISIONS TO DIRECTORY ASSISTANCE CHARGES
Reference: Tariff Notice 2705
The Commission has received an application from British Columbia Telephone Company (B.C. Tel), dated 18 September 1992, for approval of tariff revisions related to directory assistance charges.
In its application, B.C. Tel proposes to:
(1) introduce a local directory assistance (LDA) charge of $0.50 for out-of-book telephone numbers (numbers that are not listed in the current edition of the company's telephone directory), while retaining the current charge of $0.80 for in-book telephone numbers,
(2) eliminate the current free allowance of 250 Long Distance Directory Assistance (LDDA) calls to the United States per access per month,
(3) reduce the current Canada-U.S. LDDA charge from $0.80 to $0.50, and
(4) introduce a charge of $0.50 for all LDDA calls in Canada (this would not apply to requests for 800 numbers directed to 1-800-555-1212).
In addition, B.C. Tel is proposing various changes to current exceptions to the application of LDA and LDDA charges. In particular, the company proposes to:
(1) remove the exemption from the LDA charge for in-book telephone numbers for persons calling from hotel PBX systems,
(2) remove the exemption from LDDA charges for persons calling from federally or provincially registered hospitals and for persons who have an impairment, and
(3) exempt from LDA and LDDA charges persons calling from miscellaneous toll services (Mobile and Marine Radiotelephones, Air-to-Ground, Toll Station, Spacetel and Conferencing).
In support of its application, B.C. Tel has submitted information for which it has claimed confidentiality. An abridged version of this information has been provided for the public record.
The Commission addressed interrogatories to B.C. Tel with respect to its application. The company responded to these interrogatories on 21 January 1993.
The application may be examined at any of B.C. Tel's business offices or at the offices of the CRTC, Room 201, Central Building, Les Terrasses de la Chaudière, 1 Promenade du Portage, Hull, Quebec, or Suite 1380, 800 Burrard Street, Vancouver, British Columbia. A copy of B.C. Tel's application and of its responses to the Commission's interrogatories may be obtained by any person upon request directed to the company at the address shown below.
