Decision

Ottawa, 10 February 1993
Decision CRTC 93-50
South Muskoka Broadcasting Inc.
Bracebridge, Ontario - 920521200
In Public Notice 1992-57 dated 27 August 1992, the Commission announced the receipt of an application by South Muskoka Broadcasting Inc. to amend the broadcasting licence of radio programming undertaking CFBG-FM Bracebridge, by reducing the minimum of station- produced programming from 80 hours weekly to 34 hours.
Interventions in opposition to this application were received from the Area Municipality of the Town of Bracebridge, the ACTRA Media Guild, and Jim Boyes of Bracebridge. The concerns raised included the loss of jobs for some CFBG-FM employees and the loss of locally-oriented programming in light of the renewal decision CRTC 92-257, dated 1 May 1992, which committed CFBG-FM to a minimum weekly level of 80 hours of local programming. In its replies to the concerns raised, the applicant noted that financial difficulties make the proposed change necessary and that coverage of local matters will not be reduced.
Following consideration of the views of the applicant and the interveners, the Commission is not convinced that a weekly minimum of 34 hours of locally-produced programming is an adequate level. Therefore, the Commission approves in part the request to reduce the amount of local programming on CFBG-FM. Accordingly, by condition of licence, the licensee is required to broadcast at least 42 hours of locally-produced programming in each broadcast week. This would provide local programming at a level similar to that which existed when the station was originally licensed.
