Decision CRTC 92-442
Short-term Renewal of the English-language Television Network Licence Issued to CTV Television Network Limited
The broadcasting licence issued to CTV Television Network Limited (CTV), last renewed in Decision CRTC 87-200 dated 24 March 1987, is due to expire on 31 August of this year. Over the current licence period, the shareholders of CTV have explored numerous proposals to restructure the network. To date, however, the issue of CTV's future ownership structure remains unresolved.
In order to permit the licensee's, shareholders to continue their negotiations regarding the terms of a new shareholder's agreement, the Commission has determined that the public interest would be best served by issuing CTV a short-term administrative licence renewal. Accordingly, the Commission renews the television network licence issued to CTV for a period of nine months, from 1 September 1992 to 31 May 1993, subject to the same terms and conditions as the last year of the current licence. The Commission urges the licensee's shareholders to make every effort to reach an agreement and resolve the question of CTV's ownership structure in order to strengthen the network service.
At the time of CTV's next licence renewal, in assessing the licensee's compliance with its conditions of licence, the Commission will take into account CTV's performance over the broadcast year ending 31 August 1992 and the nine-month licence term granted herein.
