CHAI-FM Châteauguay - New transmitter in Candiac

1.

The Commission approves the application by Radio communautaire de Châteauguay CHAI-MF (Radio communautaire de Châteauguay) to amend the broadcasting licence of French-language Type B community radio programming undertaking CHAI-FM Châteauguay to authorize it to operate a synchronous transmitter in Candiac.

The new transmitter will operate at 101.9 MHz (channel 270A1) with an average effective radiated power of 47 watts.

Radio communautaire de Châteauguay noted that with the new transmitter it will be able to serve most of the population in the territory of the regional county municipality (RCM) of Roussillon located in the communities of Mercier, Delson, Candiac, Laprairie, St-Constant and Ste-Catherine, and that its potential audience will increase from 53,000 to 91,000.

The Commission received several interventions in support of the application. The Association des radiodiffuseurs communautaires du Québec noted that several municipalities in the Roussillon RCM currently do not have a local community radio station.

The Department of Industry (the Department) has advised the Commission that, while this application is conditionally technically acceptable, it will only issue a broadcasting certificate when it has determined that the proposed technical parameters will not create any unacceptable interference with aeronautical NAV/COM services.

The Commission reminds the licensee that, pursuant to section 22(1) of the Broadcasting Act, no licence may be issued until the Department notifies the Commission that its technical requirements have been met, and that a broadcasting certificate will be issued.
